About Layer Rotation

Layer tasks belong to the tradition of figural transformation. A person studies separate parts, works out how each one has to be turned to reach a common orientation, and then imagines the parts combined into a single figure. The display is deliberately plain, because the difficulty is meant to come from the transformation itself and not from decoding a picture.

The historical line runs through form board and paper folding tasks, where an examinee predicts what a shape will look like after it is moved, folded, or assembled. Superimposition formats, in which transparent overlays are combined into one image, appear across the twentieth century in both research batteries and applied selection testing. What makes the family useful is that the answer cannot be recognised: it has to be constructed, then matched.

In interpretation, layer performance is discussed under mental rotation, spatial visualization, and figural integration. It is usually compared with construction tasks and with reasoning tasks, to see whether a person works most efficiently with spatial transformation, with abstract rules, or with verbal material.

It should be compared with other visual spatial tasks to separate transformation from construction, and with fluid reasoning tasks to separate spatial work from rule discovery.

One subtest should never be read as the whole construct. CHC-informed interpretation is strongest when related tasks are compared across domains: verbal knowledge with other verbal tasks, fluid reasoning with other novel problem-solving tasks, spatial work with other visual tasks, and speed or memory tasks with their closest neighbors. Instructions

  • You will see 30 items. Each one shows transparent layers at the top and eight possible results below them.
  • Every layer carries a blue tab on one edge. Turn each layer in your mind until its tab points up. The tab is only a marker; it is not part of the pattern.
  • Layers are turned, never flipped.
  • Now imagine the turned layers stacked on top of each other. A square is dark in the result if it is dark on any of them.
  • Choose the option that matches that stack.
  • Time: 45 seconds per item.
