This is why a norm sample description is the load bearing element of any score report, and why its absence is more serious than a short item count. Yet the consumer convention runs backward: professional reports show ranges and consumer products show integers, because an integer is more satisfying to receive and more shareable afterward. We found no public evidence that the Brainable IQ result is delivered with a confidence interval or an error estimate.
The practical consequence is worth stating concretely. If a short unsupervised quiz carried an interval of plus or minus 12 points, then a displayed 124 would be consistent with a true standing anywhere from 112 to 136, which spans the difference between comfortably above average and near the conventional gifted threshold. The integer conceals that spread entirely. The research record is unusually clear for a behavioral science literature.
Start with scale. Owen and colleagues published a six week trial in Nature in 2010, run with the BBC, in which 11,430 participants trained on cognitive tasks online. Participants improved on every task they practiced. The improvements did not carry over to untrained tasks, including tasks closely related to the trained ones. That study is old enough now that its conclusions have been tested repeatedly rather than accepted on authority. The tasks behind that trial had a second life as a product, since the battery sold today as Creyos, formerly Cambridge Brain Sciences traces directly to Adrian Owen's research, and it is positioned as measurement for clinicians rather than as training, with no price published anywhere on its site.
Then the systematic reviews. Simons and colleagues, writing in Psychological Science in the Public Interest in 2016, examined the body of evidence cited by commercial brain training companies, some 132 papers, and concluded that there is extensive evidence for improvement on trained tasks, weaker evidence for closely related tasks, and little evidence of broad cognitive benefit. Sala and Gobet, across a series of meta analyses beginning in 2016 and 2017, reached a sharper version of the same result: far transfer effects shrink toward zero once studies use active control groups, which suggests that the modest gains reported in weaker designs reflect expectancy and motivation rather than cognitive change.
The regulatory record points the same direction. In January 2016 the Federal Trade Commission announced that Lumos Labs, the company behind Lumosity, would pay 2 million dollars to settle charges of deceptive advertising over claims that its games improved performance at work and school and reduced cognitive decline, with a 50 million dollar judgment suspended based on the company's finances. The agency's position was not that games are worthless but that the specific promises outran the evidence supporting them.
Where does that leave a buyer? With a narrow honest claim available and a broad one that is not. Playing cognitive games improves your play at those games, may transfer modestly to near identical tasks, and is a pleasant way to spend 15 minutes. Presenting that as a route to a higher IQ conflates a practice effect with a change in underlying ability. Professional practice typically recommends waiting months rather than weeks between administrations of the same battery for exactly this reason, and reports the retest interval alongside the score.
Inside a subscription that encourages daily play, those conditions cannot hold. Items and game mechanics become familiar. Strategies get learned. A user who takes the assessment early and again after a month of training is not producing two comparable measurements; they are producing one measurement and one rehearsal. On those terms it is a defensible purchase, and enjoying the exercise is a sufficient reason to do it. Confirm the renewal amount and cancellation route first.
Do not buy it as a way to obtain an IQ score you intend to rely on, cite, or act upon. The public evidence does not support that use, and a recurring subscription is an inefficient path to a single number in any case. Yes. In January 2016 the Federal Trade Commission settled with Lumos Labs over Lumosity's advertising, with a 2 million dollar payment and a suspended 50 million dollar judgment.
Why did my score go up on a retake?
Familiarity with the format and the items explains most short interval gains. A second sitting after practice measures rehearsal as much as ability, which is why professionals leave long gaps between administrations.
Can I show this result to a school or an employer?
No. Unproctored results without identity verification carry no weight for placement or hiring, regardless of which provider generated them.
Can it detect dementia or cognitive decline?
No consumer app can, and a steady score cannot rule anything out. Concerns about memory or thinking changes belong with a physician who can order appropriate evaluation.
Is it appropriate for children?
The games may be entertaining, but any decision about a child's education needs age specific norms and a supervised administration. Nothing published shows child specific validation for the IQ layer.
Are the negative reviews representative?
Review platforms attract dissatisfied customers disproportionately, so treat volume with care. Still, a TrustScore around 2.2 across roughly 570 Trustpilot reviews in August 2026 is low enough to be worth reading before you buy.
